The Toyota Aygo is the smallest car on the Euro Hire Drive fleet and, for a lot of people, the right one. This guide covers what it is like to drive, who it suits, when you should size up, and how hiring one from our depot in Livingston works.
What the Aygo is
The Aygo is a five-door city car with four seats, a small boot that takes a couple of soft bags or a weekly shop, and a petrol engine that sips fuel. It is short enough to park in spaces a hatchback would not fit, light on its feet in town, and simple to drive. Most of ours are automatics, which suits drivers who are out of practice or who just want an easy week.
Who it suits
- Drivers whose own car is in the garage and who need something for the commute across Livingston, Bathgate or Broxburn.
- Visitors flying into Edinburgh Airport, fifteen minutes from our depot, who want a car for a few days in the city and the Lothians.
- Students and young drivers, subject to our minimum age of 23 with two years’ driving experience.
- Anyone who mostly drives alone or as a couple and does not need to carry much.
When to size up
Four seats and a small boot are enough for most short hires, but there are three cases where the next group up is the better call. If you are carrying more than two people with luggage, take a Renault Clio or a VW Golf. If you are heading north on the A9 or into the Highlands, a Nissan Qashqai or a RAV4 will be more comfortable and more sure-footed in bad weather. And if the trip is really about moving things rather than people, a small van costs the same effort to hire and carries five times as much.
What it is like to run
A small petrol engine, low weight and a light body mean the Aygo typically returns somewhere in the mid-fifties for miles per gallon on mixed driving, so a week of commuting does not hurt. Insurance groups are low, which is part of why it is the entry point on most hire fleets. It is not a motorway cruiser; it will do the M8 to Glasgow happily, but a longer run is where the medium group earns its keep.
