A Luton is the biggest van you can drive on a normal car licence: a box body over the cab, eighteen to twenty cubic metres inside, and a tail lift that raises half a tonne so the sofa, the wardrobes and the washing machine go in without a second person straining. What fits in a Luton van
A typical three-bedroom house in one load: two sofas, three double beds and mattresses, three wardrobes, a dining table and chairs, a fridge freezer, a washing machine, a tumble dryer, and somewhere between eighty and a hundred boxes, with the tail lift doing the lifting on everything heavy. Long items such as a dismantled bed frame or a roll of carpet go in lengthways; the box is about four metres long, two metres wide and two metres high inside.

Driving a Luton: what to know
- Height. About 3.2 metres. Most supermarket and retail park car parks have barriers lower than that, so plan where you will stop.
- Mirrors. There is no rear window; the big door mirrors show you everything, and we adjust them with you at handover.
- The tail lift. Simple two-button control. We demonstrate it at collection, including how to stow it, and it lifts 500 kg.
- Loading. Heavy items forward and low, tied to the rails, and the load spread across the floor. A well packed Luton drives like a normal van.
- Width. A little over two metres. Tenement streets in Edinburgh and Glasgow are fine; narrow rural lanes need care.

Do I need a special licence?
No. Our Lutons are 3.5 tonne vehicles, so a standard UK category B car licence covers them. Bring your photocard and a DVLA check code.
Will you show me how the tail lift works?
Yes. Every Luton handover includes a demonstration of the tail lift and how to stow it before you drive.
Is there a deposit?
Yes. A refundable security deposit is held on a card at collection and released after the van is returned and checked. We confirm the amount when you enquire.
Can I hire a Luton for one day?
Yes. Most house moves are a single-day hire. Saturdays at the end of the month go first, so book those a week or two ahead.
Can you deliver the Luton?
Across West Lothian, yes, for most hires; further afield for hires of a week or more. Ask when you enquire.
