Hire Insurance and Damage Cover, Explained in Plain English

Trusted by Industry Leaders:

What is covered, what the excess is, and how to reduce it

Every vehicle Euro Hire Drive hires comes with insurance for the named driver included in the price, along with VAT, mileage and UK breakdown cover. This page explains what that insurance does and does not do, what an excess is, how the collision damage waiver reduces it, and the few things you must tell us before you book so the cover is valid. It is a plain-English summary; the rental agreement you sign at collection is the document that applies.

The excess, and how to reduce it

If the vehicle is damaged or stolen during the hire, you are responsible for the first part of the cost, known as the excess. The amount depends on the vehicle group, the driver’s experience and the type of licence held, and it is written on the agreement before you sign. You can reduce your liability by taking a collision damage waiver for a small fee per day; it does not remove every responsibility (damage caused by negligence, an unauthorised driver, driving where the agreement does not allow, or breaking the terms is still yours), so read the waiver’s exclusions at collection.

The deposit

A refundable security deposit is held on a card in the driver’s name at collection and released after the vehicle is returned and checked. It is separate from the excess; it is held against the excess, fuel, mileage and any charges that arise. The amount depends on the vehicle group and the driver.

Who the insurance covers

  • Drivers aged 23 to 70 for cars and vans, 25 and over for minibuses and people carriers, and 25 to 70 for sports, prestige, SUV and 4×4 groups.
  • At least two years’ driving experience, five for the SUV, 4×4 and prestige groups. Restrictions and a surcharge may apply at 23 and 24.
  • Any driving convictions or disqualifications must be declared before booking so we can confirm eligibility.
  • Additional drivers must meet the same rules and be present at collection with their documents.

Keeping the cover valid

  • Return on time or extend. A vehicle kept past the agreed return without an extension arranged with the office is uninsured, and charges apply. Call 01506 444455 before the hire ends.
  • Lock it. Theft cover depends on the vehicle being locked when unattended and the keys kept secure and never left inside.
  • Only named drivers. Letting someone who is not on the agreement drive puts the cover, and you, at risk.
  • Stay on the agreed roads. Off-road use, and anything the agreement excludes, is not covered unless agreed in advance.
  • Report damage straight away. Call the depot, take photos, and get the other party’s details if another vehicle is involved.

Insurance questions

Can I use my own insurance or a card’s hire excess cover?

The vehicle is insured on our policy. Separate excess-reimbursement policies from your card or an insurer are between you and them; tell us if you hold one and we will explain how the deposit and excess work alongside it.

What happens if the van is damaged?

Report it to the depot as soon as it is safe. We assess the damage with you at return, and your liability is limited to the excess on the agreement, less any waiver you have taken.

Is business use covered?

Tell us what the vehicle will be used for when you book. Standard business use is covered on business accounts; hire and reward, passenger carrying for payment and other specialist uses need agreeing in advance.

Are my belongings in the van insured?

No. The vehicle policy does not cover your contents; check your home or business insurance for goods in transit.

Where can I read the full terms?

The rental guide and the terms and conditions set out the detail, and the agreement you sign at collection is the binding document. Our guide to licence requirements covers who can drive what.
