A garden project generates more waste than anyone expects: the old patio, the turf, the hedge, the soil from the new drainage run. Taking it away in a car boot means a dozen trips to the recycling centre and a ruined weekend. A hired 3.5 tonne tipper does it in one or two, and brings the new materials back on the return leg. This guide covers how tipper hire from our Livingston depot works for a household project in West Lothian.
Which body: tipper or dropside
A tipper has a body that raises and empties itself; it is the choice for soil, turf, rubble, chippings and green waste, where you want to tip the load rather than shovel it off. A dropside has a flat body with sides that fold down; it is the choice for long things, such as sleepers, fence panels, decking boards and a mini digger on ramps. Our single cab tipper carries three people, the double cab carries six, and the Ford Transit dropside tipper does both jobs on one vehicle.
How much it actually carries
The vehicle weighs 3.5 tonnes fully loaded, and the payload is typically 1,000 to 1,200 kg. That is the number that matters, because a cubic metre of wet soil can weigh 1,500 kg on its own. Fill by weight, not by how full the body looks: a level load of soil or rubble is about a tonne, a heaped one is over. Turf, hedge cuttings and timber are lighter and can be loaded higher, but sheet them so nothing blows off on the A71.
Where the waste can go
West Lothian’s household recycling centres accept garden and DIY waste, but they treat a tipper as a commercial vehicle and ask for a booking or a permit, so check the council’s current rules a few days before. Soil and rubble in quantity, and anything from a paid contractor, count as trade waste and belong at a licensed transfer station; there are several around Livingston, Bathgate and Broxburn, and we will point you at the nearest when you book.
A typical weekend
- Collect the tipper on Friday afternoon from 5A Grange Road, Houstoun Industrial Estate; a weekend hire runs to Monday morning.
- Saturday morning: lift the old patio and load it. Tip it at the transfer station. Collect the type 1 sub-base and sand on the way back.
- Saturday afternoon: turf and hedge cuttings go in, tip at the recycling centre with your booking.
- Sunday: lay the new patio with everything already on site. Return the tipper on Monday morning.
What to bring and what to know
- A photocard licence held for two years or more; drivers aged 23 to 70. A tipper drives on a standard category B licence.
- A DVLA check code or your National Insurance number, two proofs of address from the last three months, and a card in the driver’s name for the refundable deposit.
- Tip only on level ground, away from overhead lines, with nobody behind the vehicle.
- Strap long loads on a dropside and sheet loose loads on a tipper.

Get a quoteTipper hire for a garden: questions
Do I need a special licence?
No. All of our tippers and dropsides are 3.5 tonne vehicles, covered by a standard car licence.
Can I hire for a single day?
Yes. A day covers most clearances; a weekend suits a patio or decking project where the materials come back on the return trip.
Will you show me how the tipping body works?
Yes. Every handover includes a demonstration of the controls before you drive.
Do you cover Bathgate, Broxburn and Linlithgow?
Yes. See our pages for Bathgate, Broxburn and Linlithgow; delivery across West Lothian can be arranged.
