The 17 seater and the D1 licence
A 17 seat minibus is a category D1 vehicle. Drivers who passed their car test before 1 January 1997 usually have D1 on their licence automatically (it shows on the back of the photocard); drivers who passed later need to have taken the D1 test. Check the back of your licence before you book, and if nobody in the group holds D1, two 9 seaters on category B licences carry the same number of people.
What you need to hire a minibus
- A photocard driving licence held for at least two years; drivers aged 25 and over.
- D1 entitlement for the 17 seater.
- A DVLA licence check code from the last 21 days, or your National Insurance number.
- Two proofs of address dated within the last three months, one a bank or card statement.
- A card in the driver’s name for the refundable security deposit.
VAT, insurance for the named driver, mileage and UK breakdown cover are included; mileage is limited on one to three day hires.
Minibus hire questions
Can we add a second driver for a long trip?
Yes. Additional drivers can be added for a small charge, subject to the same age and licence checks, and must be present at collection.
Can we take the minibus to England or on a ferry?
Anywhere on the UK mainland is fine. Tell us about ferries and longer trips when you book so we can advise.
Is there space for luggage in the 17 seater?
There is a rack area at the rear, but with 17 people aboard luggage space is limited. For a group with cases, add a small van or take two 9 seaters.
Can you deliver the minibus?
Across West Lothian for most hires, and further afield for hires of a week or more; ask when you enquire.
Can I hire for a weekend?
Yes. Weekend hire runs from Friday afternoon to Monday morning.
