Where the move is over a distance, size up so it is one trip. Where the move is across town, a smaller van and two trips can be easier to park at both ends.
When to book
End-of-month Saturdays are the busiest days of the year for house moves, and September and June add student moves on top. Book those a week or two ahead. Midweek moves can often be arranged at short notice, and a weekday hire usually means a quieter road and an easier parking space outside the flat.
How to load a van for a move
- Heavy and square first. Washing machine, fridge, chests of drawers: against the bulkhead, low, with the weight spread across the floor.
- Tall items against the sides. Wardrobes, bookcases and mattresses stand upright along the walls and are strapped to the rails.
- Boxes in tight rows. Heaviest at the bottom, same-size boxes together so nothing shifts, soft things on top.
- Sofas last. On end if they fit, wrapped, and the door closes on a load that cannot move.
- Tail lift for anything heavy. On a Luton, let the lift do the lifting. We show you how at handover.
What to bring and what to expect
- Your photocard licence, a DVLA check code from the last 21 days, two proofs of address dated within the last three months, and a card for the refundable deposit.
- A walk round the van together at collection, so its condition is agreed before you drive.
- Straps and blankets: bring your own or ask what we can supply when you book.
- Fuel returned at the level agreed at collection, and the deposit released after the van is checked.

Moving house van hire questions
Do I need a special licence?
No. Every van we hire is under 3.5 tonnes, so a standard UK category B car licence covers it, including the Luton.
Can I hire the van for two days?
Yes. A two-day hire lets you load the evening before and move in the morning, which many families prefer.
Is there a deposit?
Yes. A refundable security deposit is held on a card at collection and released after the van is returned and checked. We confirm the amount when you enquire.
Can someone else drive as well?
Usually yes. Give us the second driver’s details when you book so they are added at collection.
What if the move runs over?
Call the depot on 01506 444455 and we can usually extend over the phone.
